Smokie & 101 Violins - live in Bucharest, 2008
In December 2008, the legendary British band Smokie returned to Romania with a special concert series titled “Christmas with Smokie and 101 Violins,” performing in Bucharest as well as in Iași, Cluj, and Timișoara. The project brought together the band’s unmistakable sound and a large orchestra, offering audiences a festive concert with a distinctive symphonic atmosphere.
The 101 Violins Orchestra brought together some of the finest violinists in the country, including Dan Bozgan, concertmaster of the Craiova Lyric Theatre.
Writing about the event, Jurnalul.ro highlighted his reputation, describing him as “renowned for his performances in remarkable national and international productions, where he has accompanied elite soloists,” and noting his “virtuoso violin playing, appreciated for its expressive and captivating quality.”
The idea of performing alongside a large orchestra was embraced enthusiastically by Smokie, who viewed the project as a genuine artistic challenge. According to Jurnalul.ro, the organizers promised “a memorable show, thanks to its special stage design, unique sound, and the surprises prepared throughout the concert,” a promise fulfilled through the contribution of accomplished musicians such as Dan Bozgan.
